Description
Work procedures are defined and followed to keep people safe at work. However, many accidents occur during non-routine operations such as when equipment is being maintained, cleaned, fixed or unblocked. Accidents include amputations, electrocution, crushing and deaths.
To prevent accidents, equipment should be made safe before such work takes place, and proper procedures followed to reinstate the equipment. Lock out, tag out (LOTO) is one part of the process for making equipment safe.

The Courses123 LOTO Course explains a five-step process, from planning to trying out, before work is carried out. It also summarises the steps to be taken after work has finished but before restoring power. As well as more obvious electrical hazards, the course explains that there are other energy sources that might need to be protected against, including hydraulic pressure, gas and moving parts. It uses cases studies based on real accidents to illustrate the importance of applying controls and to engage the learner.
It is not the aim of this course to explain particular shutdown sequences or LOTO steps for specific equipment. Although the course illustrates examples of how energy sources can be locked out, it is the responsibility of the employer to carry out specific risk assessments, to have tailored procedures in place and to train employees to use specific equipment.
Users are required to take a final test consisting of 10 default questions. The default pass mark is 70%
The course administrator within your organisation can:
- Change the pass mark
- Implement the random test question feature which selects 10 questions from a bank of 20.
- Can specify that more than 10 questions must be answered (up to the full bank of 20 questions)
The test provides evidence of understanding the information provided in the course. However, where safety is dependent on an employee understanding how to carry out isolation processes, including LOTO, this should be assessed by a competent person.
Target Audience
Employees or contractors involved with operating or maintaining machinery or plant could use this course as part of an induction process or as refresher training. Where LOTO is a significant element of an individual’s job role, it is recommended that this course is used as part of a blended learning approach, for example as preparation for a skills-based practical course or as a refresher of the key points.
