Description
The Courses123 Sexual Harassment eLearning course is aimed at creating an awareness of sexual harassment in workplaces in the United States. Sexual harassment is a form of sex discrimination which is prohibited under the federal law, Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, but it is still a major problem for many men and women in the workplace. It is estimated that 1 in 4 women and 1 in 10 men have experienced sexual harassment at work, and up to 70% of victims do not report incidents out of fear. It is critical that everyone recognizes the type of behaviors that could be considered sexual harassment, learns how to respond, and understands how they can help prevent it from occurring.

Sexual harassment is defined as any unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, or other verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature. It can also be harassment based on a person’s sex. There are two forms of sexual harassment according to federal law: hostile work environment and quid pro quo. To be considered a hostile work environment, the behavior must:
- Be either “severe” or “pervasive”
- Create a hostile or intimidating work environment for the victim, and
- Be seen that way according to the “reasonable person” standard
Quid pro quo sexual harassment is when a person in an authoritative position asks or hints at sexual actions in exchange for an employment benefit or when a negative employment action has been issued for denying a sexual proposition.
Using a variety of case studies, scenario-based interactions, 3D characters and an interactive branching activity, learners will be able to recognize what behaviors are considered sexual harassment and how victims and bystanders can respond. The course describes the internal and external complaint processes available to victims who have been sexually harassed and their rights under law.
