Whatever your industry, or the size or nature of your organisation, the keys to effectively managing health and safety are:

  • A trained/skilled workforce operating in an environment where people are trusted and involved.

The primary piece of legislation which affects Health and Safety matters in the workplace is the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974. Other regulations that organisations must be aware of are the ‘six-pack’ regulations:

The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations,The Workplace (Health, Safety  and Welfare) Regulations, The Health and Safety (Display Screen Equipment) Regulations, The Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations, The Manual Handling Operations Regulations, The Personal Protective Equipment at Work Regulations. As a manager, you are also accountable for the safety of people under the Corporate Manslaughter and Corporate Homicide Act.

The Managing Health and Safety eLearning course effectively explains the importance of managing Health and Safety issues in the workplace. It highlights why it is important for managers to have an understanding of Health and Safety law.  In addition, it describes their responsibilities under current legislation.

Users will learn about the legal requirement to implement a Health and Safety policy. They will also understand they have a key role in implementing this policy.

The course emphasis the role of the HSE.  It explains the power of the HSE Inspectors to enter, inspect and search a premises. Additionally, users will learn that HSE inspectors can question employers and employees.  They can also investigate incidents and serve improvement and prohibition notices. Ultimately, the HSE have the power to prosecute.

Users will learn the importance of performing risk assessments.  The need for appropriate training is also explained. This course contains a section on accidents including examples, to help explain the causes and consequences of accidents and how they are categorised and managed.

Furthermore, an explanation of the regulations, requiring employers to report specified work incidents is provided. RIDDOR is the Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations.  Users will learn how and when to report accidents.  The necessity to record accidents is also outlined.

On completion of the Managing Health and Safety eLearning course, delegates will understand the importance of encouraging high standards of Health and Safety through good example and management of Health and Safety issues.
